About the instructor, Dr. Paul Ayres:

Dr. Paul Ayres is a Forensic Scientist / Fire & Explosion Investigator with Brookes Bell, a leading technical and scientific consultancy with a global presence. In this role, he conducts complex fire and explosion investigations in the maritime and energy sectors. Over the past 15 years, Dr. Ayres has investigated several hundred fire and explosion incidents, including felonious arson and homicide cases, mass-fatality incidents, attacks on government facilities and critical infrastructure, and explosions involving fuel gases and improvised explosive devices (IEDs). He has served as an expert witness in state and federal courts, providing technical analysis in civil and criminal matters.
As an educator, Dr. Ayres has taught undergraduate and graduate-level fire and emergency services courses since 2016. He currently serves as a lecturer at the University of North Texas at Dallas. His field experience brings a practical, applied perspective to the classroom. Dr. Ayres's extensive experience with fatal incidents—30 real-world fire and explosion cases involving 44 victims—led to his role as a guest instructor for the Forensic Fire Death Investigation course at Texas State University in 2018. In this role, he has participated in more than 50 live fire experiments using human cadavers to study the effects of fire on the human body. Since 2020, he has also served as a guest instructor in the Fire Executive Management Training (FEMT) program at Sam Houston State University, where he teaches the administrative responsibilities involved in overseeing a fire investigation unit.
Dr. Ayres holds an associate degree in fire science, a bachelor’s in emergency management, a graduate certificate in homeland security, a master’s in public administration, and a PhD in forensic science with a concentration in fire and explosion investigations. His professional certifications include TCOLE Master Peace Officer and Instructor, as well as a wide range of TCFP credentials—Basic Wildland Firefighter, Master Structure Firefighter, Driver/Operator-Pumper, Hazardous Materials Technician, Fire Officer I, Instructor III, Master Fire Inspector, Plan Examiner I, Master Fire/Arson Investigator, Basic Fire Marshal, and Head of Department–Prevention.
